The Godhead Of The Father

The works of creation prove the existence, glory, wisdom and power of the Godhead.

*Psalms 19:1-3 “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.”

*Romans 1:20 “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.”

The Godhead is a mystery.1 (note)

Job 11:7-9 “Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? 8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know? 9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.”

Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

The Father is one of three Persons who make up the Godhead.2

*Matthew 28:19 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”3

The Personhood of the Father

The Father is a person and distinct from Christ.

John 4:34 “Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.”

*Matthew 6:9 “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”

*John 12:49-50 “For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.”

Matthew 11:25-26 “At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. 26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.”

John 3:35 “The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.”

Notes

  1. Regarding “the divine mystery of the essence of God, Christ ever maintained a wise reserve. He did this that He might close the door where human conjectures should not be encouraged. ” Manuscript 45, 1900.10.
  2. “Although the Old Testament alludes to the Persons of the Godhead, it doesn’t distinguish between them.” P. G. Damsteeg, Seventh-day Adventists Believe, (Washington, D.C.: Ministerial Association, 1988), 30.
  3. “The Godhead was stirred with pity for the race, and the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit gave themselves to the working out of the plan of redemption.” Letter 12, 1901.10.
