Righteousness By Faith Questions Answered
Our church is blessed with a rich treasury of writings on the subject of righteousness by faith. The books Desire of Ages and Steps to Christ have been read and continue to be read by millions of believers of all faiths. They are classics and among the best writings in their subject matter. We also have other authors—A. G. Daniells, Meade MacGuire, W. W. Prescott, E. L. Minchin and many others—who have penned wonderful treatises on righteousness by faith and the many associated topics. On this page you find a sample of some of these writings. You can find an "ocean" more of these writings at the White Estate (egwwritings.org) and the Adventist Archives (http://documents.adventistarchives.org/Periodicals/Forms/AllFolders.aspx).—Dan
"As the sinner, drawn by the love of Christ, approaches the cross, and prostrates himself before it, there is a new creation. A new heart is given him. He becomes a new creature in Christ Jesus. Holiness finds that it has nothing more to require."
"It is only through faith in Christ that sinners may have the righteousness of Christ imputed unto them, and that they may be “made the righteousness of God in him.” Our sins were laid on Christ, punished in Christ, put away by Christ, in order that his righteousness might be imputed to us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."
"Christ is the sinner’s only hope. By his death he brought salvation within the reach of all. Through his grace all may become loyal subjects of God’s kingdom...." This is a most encouraging article on how Christ enables salvation and transformation.
"The true Christian obtains an experience that brings holiness. The light of truth irradiates his understanding. A glow of love for the Redeemer clears away the cloud that has interposed between his soul and God. The will of God, pure, elevated, and sanctified, becomes his will. His countenance reveals the light of heaven. His body is a fit temple for the Holy Spirit. Holiness adorns his character. God can commune with him; for soul and body are in harmony with the principles of heaven." ST July 17, 1901, par. 9 This is a wonderfully clear reading on the need for God-wrought holiness in the lives of believers. Recall in reading, this is only possible through faith in the mighty transforming power of Christ within!
"You can be just what Christ said His disciples should be, “the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14. You should diffuse that light, hope, and faith to others. You are not to go groaning your way onward in His service as though He were a hard taskmaster, laying upon you burdens that you cannot carry. This is not the case. He wants you to be filled with joy, to be filled with the blessing of God, to know the length and breadth and height and depth of the love of God, which passeth knowledge. When His name is mentioned, He wants it to strike the keynote, and there will be a response in your hearts. Then you can offer up thanksgiving and glory and honor and praise to Him that sitteth on the throne and to the Lamb. You should learn to sing that song here, and when you are changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, you will know just where to strike the song of triumph with the heavenly angels and with the redeemed saints. We shall make heaven’s arches ring with praise and glory. Now, let the arches ring here. Let this place waken praise in your hearts." (Read all of Quality Of Our Faith.)
"The only begotten Son of God came to this world to redeem the fallen race. He has given us evidence of his great power. He will enable those who receive him to build up characters free from all the tendencies that Satan reveals. We can resist the enemy and all his forces. The battle will be won, the victory gained, by him who chooses Christ as his leader, determined to do right because it is right." {RH June 9, 1910, par. 1} (Read Victory Is Certain)
Carlyle B. Haynes (1882-1958) was a leading pastor and well known evangelist in the church. He was also a prolific writer, authoring 45 books and numerous articles. He was the director of the Adventist War Service Commission during both world wars.
"I found that explaining the prophecies of Daniel, the 1260 days, the 2300 days, the truth of the Sabbath, signs of Christ's coming, and the preaching of the unconscious state of the dead had nothing in it—at least, the way I was doing it—that could enable me to conquer my own rebellious will or bring into my life the power to overcome temptation and sin. I became concerned, and there was pressed into my conscience the question as to whether I really was accepted of God."—Carlyle B. Haynes
Haynes delivered this sermon on his efforts to receive Christ as his righteousness at the General Conference session of 1926. It is a sermon that many many members can identify with!
A G. Daniells (1858-1935) was a pastor and administrator in the church. Born in Iowa of a physician father, Daniells joined the SDA faith at the age of ten. In 1875 he attended Battle Creek College for one year, remaining only one year due to ill heath. Following Battle Creek, he and his wife taught public school for one year, after which he was called to the ministry. In 1878 he pastored in Texas for one year, then served as a secretary to the Whites, and later an evangelist in Iowa. In 1886 he was called to go as a pioneer missionary to New Zealand, and remained in that part of the world for the next 14 years, eventually serving as President of the New Zealand and Australian Conferences, and later, the Australasian Union Conference. In 1901 he became the President of the General Conference at a time of crisis, and played a pivotal role in the development of a new organizational structure in the church. The new structure allowed the church to greatly expand, and Daniells traveled throughout the world getting firsthand information on what was going on. In 1922 he reverted to Secretary of the world church for four years. Concerned with the development of a spiritual ministry, he led in the formation of the Ministerial Association around that time, and spent much time teaching and writing on the righteousness of Christ. His Christ Our Righteousness (1941) was one of the very important books published by the church to bring an awareness of the message of righteousness by faith.
Meade MacGuire (1875-1967) was a prominent Adventist leader and author. In 1891, when he was 16 years old, he organized a youth society at his home church in Antigo, Wisconsin, which eventually developed into the Missionary Volunteer Society. In 1903 he served as a pastor in Colorado. In 1907 he joined the Young People’s Department at the General Conference. In 1913 he became a field secretary of the General Conference. In 1924 He became the Assistant Secretary of the Ministerial Association, working closely with A. G. Daniells to spread the message of righteousness by faith. He authored four important books on the topic; The Life of Victory, His Cross and Mine, Lambs Among Wolves and Does God Care, as well as other smaller publications and articles. Those attending his revivals and ministerial institutes were greatly blessed by the practical and Christ-centered messages he presented.

Meade MacGuire is wonderfully clear on the way to victory in this magazine article!
This is a wonderful presentation by Meade MacGuire on helping others understand and experience the victorious life. I found this sermon in a mimeographed half copy of a book on an education and missionary volunteer conference that took place in Colorado Springs, CO in 1923. This conference is little known, but the talks were wonderful. Read the sermon! You will know why I recommend it.
The Life of Victory by Meade MacGuire is a study of Romans and Steps to Christ. This pdf has line numbers to allow discussing in a group. This was the first book that I read of Elder MacGuire and led to my conversion and subsequently taught me much about the way of victory.—Dan
In this book, Meade MacGuire contemplates the central role of the cross in the Christian life that brings, "a deeper consciousness of the malignity of sin, and of the infinite mercy and compassion of God."
Lambs Among Wolves is wonderful in sharing the way of victory. One of the chapters is entitled, "Victory by Dying, Not Trying."
In Does God Care, Meade MacGuire explores the reasons for suffering in the Christian life. A secret that believers need to learn is that suffering is often used by God to bring His children to a closer walk with Himself. Remember, Jesus learned obedience through the things He suffered (Heb. 5:8)
This excellent article shares the how to perfect holiness God's way.
W. W. Prescott (1855-1944) was a pastor, administrator, educator and writer who had enormous influence in the church. Among the areas of influence were education—he was the president of several of our colleges and did much training of teachers; publications—he was the editor of the Review and Herald on several occasions and worked with other publications; ministerial and other training—he held institutes for pastors and teachers in many places; writer—he authored numerous articles and books that were highly regarded. In preaching, he was known for his Christ-centered messages, and his sermons at Armadale were riveting to church members and visitors alike. He wrote much on the Sabbath too.
This is a wonderful sermon on the power of God. Pointing out that the Bible is a book about power, Prescott shows that the same power exercised on behalf of His people in Bible times, is the same power that comes to us to live for Christ on a daily basis.
This is one of my favorite multi-part writings on righteousness by faith! A little booklet comprised of ten short chapters, written in the first person by W. W. Prescott—"He Loved Me"; "He Lived For Me"; "He Died For Me"; etc—this little book has been life-changing for many people. You should read it for yourself! This originally appeared as a series of articles by an anonymous author in the Youth's Instructor, but later was published with W. W. Prescott as the author. That is not surprising since Prescott was a very Christ-centered and spiritual speaker and writer. Any time I find an article with the byline W. W. Prescott I know I will be blessed!
