On this page I share Bible verses and some favorite quotes on defeating Satan. I think you will be blessed. This study began as a result of a call to come and pray with a young women who had come under the power of the enemy. The family had been seeking to overcome the enemy, and we joined them. We prayed on the basis of Christ's victory and rejoiced in what Jesus had accomplished. We read promises of the Scriptures and sang relevant songs. The presence of Jesus overcame and made a great difference, and a calm came. This wasn't the end of the effort, it took longer, but it was a serious beginning. As a result I began studying what the Bible and favorite authors said on the subject of overcoming Satan and was pleased with what I found. The Bible verses and the quotations below are but a few of the verses I have found on the subject. I am putting together a longer compilation. I pray that in studying you will find personal victory as you seek to overcome the great enemy of God and man.
Believing in and claiming the power of Jesus is key against Satan. Satan is a defeated foe and will flee at the sound of earnest prayer!
1John 4: 4 “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Col 1: 13 “He has delivered us from the power of darkness, and conveyed us into the kingdom of His dear Son.”
Rom 16: 20 “And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly.”
“Satan is well aware that the weakest soul who abides in Christ is more than a match for the hosts of darkness, and that, should he reveal himself openly, he would be met and resisted. Therefore he seeks to draw away the soldiers of the cross from their strong fortification, while he lies in ambush with his forces, ready to destroy all who venture upon his ground. Only in humble reliance upon God, and obedience to all His commandments, can we be secure.”—Ellen White, Great Controversy, p. 530.1
“The prayer of faith is the great strength of the Christian, and will assuredly prevail against Satan. This is why (Satan) insinuates that we have no need of prayer. The name of Jesus, our Advocate, he detests; and when we earnestly come to Him for help, Satan’s host is alarmed. It serves his purpose well if we neglect the exercise of prayer, for then his lying wonders are more readily received.” Ellen White, Testimonies, Vol 1, p. 296. (1862)
Prayer turns aside the attacks of Satan.” Ellen White, Reflecting Christ, p. 275.
“Satan is ever ready to insinuate that prayer is a mere form, and avails us nothing. He cannot bear to have his powerful rival appealed to. At the sound of fervent prayer, the hosts of darkness tremble. Fearing that their captive may escape, they form a wall around him, that Heaven’s light may not reach his soul. But if in his distress and helplessness the sinner looks to Jesus, pleading the merits of his blood, our compassionate Redeemer listens to the earnest, persevering prayer of faith, and sends to his deliverance a re-enforcement of angels that excel in strength. And when these angels, all-powerful, clothed with the armor of Heaven, come to the help of the fainting, pursued soul, the angels of darkness fall back, well knowing that their battle is lost, and that one more soul is escaping from the power of their influence.” Ellen White, Signs of the Times, November 18, 1886.
“Satan attacks us at our weak points; but we need not be overcome. The assault may be severe and protracted, but God has promised help for us, and in His strength we may conquer. . . . The precepts and promises of God’s word will arm (us) with divine power to resist the enemy..... Satan will be baffled and defeated when he finds the heart preoccupied with the truth of God. We need also to be often found at the throne of grace. Earnest, persevering prayer, uniting our human weakness to Omnipotence, will give us the victory.” Ellen White, Our High Calling, p. 14.
1 Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:"
"I saw that the enemy will contend either for the usefulness or the life of the godly, and will try to mar their peace as long as they live in this world. But his power is limited. He may cause the furnace to be heated, but Jesus and angels will watch the trusting Christian, that nothing may be consumed but the dross. The fire kindled by Satan can have no power to destroy or hurt the true metal. It is important to close every door possible, against the entrance of Satan. It is the privilege of every family so to live that Satan can take no advantage of anything they may say or do, to tear one another down. Every member of the family should bear in mind that all have just as much as they can do to resist our wily foe, and with earnest prayers and unyielding faith each must rely upon the merits of the blood of Christ and claim His saving strength. {1T 309.1}
The powers of darkness gather about the soul and shut Jesus from our sight, and at times we can only wait in sorrow and amazement until the cloud passes over. These seasons are sometimes terrible. Hope seems to fail, and despair seizes upon us. In these dreadful hours we must learn to trust, to depend solely upon the merits of the atonement, and in all our helpless unworthiness cast ourselves upon the merits of the crucified and risen Saviour. We shall never perish while we do this--never! When light shines on our pathway, it is no great thing to be strong in the strength of grace. But to wait patiently in hope when clouds envelop us and all is dark, requires faith and submission which causes our will to be swallowed up in the will of God. We are too quickly discouraged, and earnestly cry for the trial to be removed from us, when we should plead for patience to endure and grace to overcome." Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, 309.2
Jude 1:9 (NKJV) 9 Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
"Our Saviour could receive the heavenly revelation without becoming self-exalted. Let us seek for His humility. The enemy is subtle and very daring, but he is not invincible. He is a strong man armed, but if we keep close to the Captain of our salvation, using the weapon that He has given us, we shall be victorious. Satan is armed with sophistry and deceptive statements. It is a mistake to quote his words and then seek to refute them. This always gives him an advantage. Keep close to Christ. Do not tell all that you know, thinking thus to baffle the enemy. By allowing yourself to contradict him, you give him opportunity to confuse you by his subtle reasoning. {Lt 159, 1903, par. 14} We cannot be overcome while we place our whole dependence upon God and stand firm in His strength. When we are tempted, we must humble ourselves. We must keep back the words of argument with which we think that we could baffle the enemy. What we desire to say might be perfectly true, but God does not wish His people to controvert Satan’s suggestions. Let them take their stand on the platform of eternal truth, and let their only weapon be the Word, “It is written.” This will bring more confusion to him than any charge that we ourselves could make against him. He has used the Word of God frequently to the heavenly assemblies. God’s words stand fast forever. They cannot be changed." {Lt 159, 1903, par. 15}
"James 4: 7 “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Only God’s power, in answer to the earnest prayers of His faithful followers, brings victory—There are times when people voluntarily place themselves under the power of Satan out of curiosity, never meaning to become enslaved. Satan especially works hard at those moments to keep them under his power, as the following attests. Victory at such times not only requires the prayers of others, but also requires their earnestly choosing to take themselves out of Satan’s hands and give themselves to God.
"Some, I was shown, gratify their curiosity and tamper with the devil. They have no real faith in spiritualism and would start back with horror at the idea of being mediums. Yet they venture and place themselves in a position where Satan can exercise his power upon them. Such do not mean to enter deep into this work, but they know not what they are doing. They are venturing on the devil’s ground and are tempting him to control them. This powerful destroyer considers them his lawful prey and exercises his power upon them, and that against their will. When they wish to control themselves they cannot. They yielded their minds to Satan, and he will not release his claims, but holds them captive. No power can deliver the ensnared soul but the power of God in answer to the earnest prayers of His faithful followers."—Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, p. 299.1
1John 4: 4 “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
But Satan CANNOT control our minds without our permission!!!! The way out is pleading with God, and making sure things are right between us and God.
"I was shown that Satan cannot control minds unless they are yielded to his control. Those who depart from the right are in serious danger now. They separate themselves from God and from the watchcare of His angels, and Satan, ever upon the watch to destroy souls, begins to present to them his deceptions. Such are in the utmost peril; and if they see and try to resist the powers of darkness and to free themselves from Satan’s snare, it is not an easy matter. They have ventured on Satan’s ground, and he claims them. He will not hesitate to engage all his energies and call to his aid all his evil host to wrest a single human being from the hand of Christ. Those who have tempted the devil to tempt them will have to make desperate efforts to free themselves from his power. But when they begin to work for themselves, then angels of God whom they have grieved will come to their rescue. Satan and his angels are unwilling to lose their prey. They contend and battle with the holy angels, and the conflict is severe. But if those who have erred continue to plead, and in deep humility confess their wrongs, angels who excel in strength will prevail and wrench them from the power of the evil angels."—Ellen White, Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 1, p. 301.2
1 Cor. 15:57 "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
The following quote is similar but stronger to the one above!!! Satan cannot compel or control. He is fighting and putting every negative feeling in those he attacks, to say nothing of perhaps trying to cause manifestations in the body, but he CAN NEVER COMPEL! We can exercise our power of choice, as the second paragraph attests.
"The tempter can never compel us to do evil. He unless they are yielded to his control. The will must consent, faith must let go its hold upon Christ, before Satan can exercise his power upon us. But every sinful desire we cherish affords him a foothold. Every point in which we fail of meeting the divine standard is an open door by which he can enter to tempt and destroy us. And every failure or defeat on our part gives occasion for him to reproach Christ."—Ellen White, Desire of Ages, 125.2
"God has given us the power of choice; it is ours to exercise. We cannot change our hearts, we cannot control our thoughts, our impulses, our affections. We cannot make ourselves pure, fit for God’s service. But we canchoose to serve God, we can give Him our will; then He will work in us to will and to do according to His good pleasure. Thus our whole nature will be brought under the control of Christ".—Ellen White, Ministry of Healing, 176 (1905).
"It is not God’s purpose to coerce the will. Man was created a free moral agent. Like the inhabitants of all other worlds, he must be subjected to the test of obedience; but he is never brought into such a position that yielding to evil becomes a matter of necessity. No temptation or trial is permitted to come to him which he is unable to resist. God made such ample provision that man need never have been defeated in the conflict with Satan."—Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, 331, 332 (1890)
Revelation 12:11’s “word of their testimony” gives a key secret of victory over Satan:
Rev 12: 11: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”
"It is a law of nature that our thoughts and feelings are encouraged and strengthened as we give them utterance. While words express thoughts, it is also true that thoughts follow words. If we would give more expression to our faith, rejoice more in the blessings that we know we have—the great mercy and love of God—we should have more faith and greater joy. No tongue can express, no finite mind can conceive, the blessing that results from appreciating the goodness and love of God. Even on earth we may have joy as a wellspring, never failing, because fed by the streams that flow from the throne of God.”—Ellen White, Ministry of Healing, 251-253
“If we worship in spirit and in truth and in the beauty of holiness, it will be to us the very gate of heaven. As lessons of the wondrous works of God are repeated, and as the heart’s gratitude is expressed in prayer and song, angels from heaven take up the strain and unite in praise and thanksgiving to God. These exercises drive back the power of Satan. They expel murmurings and complainings, and Satan loses ground.”—Ellen White, Review and Herald, Oct 24, 1899
"Then let us educate our hearts and lips to speak the praise of God for His matchless love. Let us educate our souls to be hopeful and to abide in the light shining from the cross of Calvary. Never should we forget that we are children of the heavenly King, sons and daughters of the Lord of hosts. It is our privilege to maintain a calm repose in God."—Ellen White, Ministry of Healing, p. 253.1
“Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, ... and be thankful.” Colossians 3:15. Forgetting our own difficulties and troubles, let us praise God for an opportunity to live for the glory of His name. Let the fresh blessings of each new day awaken praise in our hearts for these tokens of His loving care. When you open your eyes in the morning, thank God that He has kept you through the night. Thank Him for His peace in your heart. Morning, noon, and night, let gratitude as a sweet perfume ascend to heaven.”—Ellen White, Ministry of Health and Healing, p. 138.6
"If we would give more expression to our faith, rejoice more in the blessings that we know we have,—the great mercy and love of God,—we should have more faith and greater joy. No tongue can express, no finite mind can conceive, the blessing that results from appreciating the goodness and love of God. Even on earth we may have joy as a wellspring, never failing, because fed by the streams that flow from the throne of God.”—Ellen White, Sons and Daughters of God, p. 122.4
Php 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Zeph. 3:14 “Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.
"When someone asks how you are feeling, do not try to think of something mournful to tell in order to gain sympathy. Do not talk of your lack of faith and your sorrows and sufferings. The tempter delights to hear such words. When talking on gloomy subjects, you are glorifying him. We are not to dwell on the great power of Satan to overcome us. Often we give ourselves into his hands by talking of his power. Let us talk instead of the great power of God to bind up all our interests with His own. Tell of the matchless power of Christ, and speak of His glory.”—Ellen White, Ministry of Health and Healing, p. 139.1
“Satan would have your soul; shall he have it? Say, No, never; it is Christ’s property. Satan says, “Curse God and die.” Will you do it? He curses God for you, that you may repeat his wicked blasphemy. Will you do it? No, for Jesus has died; He has purchased your life. Your soul is His property, and He will take you by the hand; He will draw you away from perdition; He will make you, as John, His beloved disciple, to win the crown of eternal life. He bids you, through me, His humble servant, “Look and live.” He opens His loving heart to you that you may hide in the cleft of the Rock. Say not, “There is no hope for me.” Satan triumphs every time you say it. Let these thoughts be in your heart, “Thou, O Lord, hast created me for Thyself.” He has permitted you to live that you might become acquainted with Jesus and be willing to follow Him.—Letter 85, 1891. (Written to J. A. Starr, September 22, 1891, from Healdsburg, California.)”—Ellen White, Manuscript Releases, Vol. 13, 151.3
We must not talk and think and magnify the power of Satan , but talk of the confidence we have in Jesus Christ. Let the love, the inexpressible love, of Jesus so be presented in our own minds and cherished that we can communicate it to the other minds, and clear away all their distrust, and lay hold of the riches of the grace of Christ, for we “are complete in Him.” He has arisen, and over the rent sepulchre of Joseph He proclaims, “I am the resurrection and the life.” {18MR 54.2} ... Light, light! We will talk light and not darkness any more. If you talk darkness, you will have darkness; if you talk light, you will have light.—Ellen White, Manuscript Releases, Vol. 18, p. 54.3}
"Every day it is our privilege to be working in the interest of the great firm, because we are in co-partnership with Christ. The uncertainties we have here are to be overcome by faith. We are not to talk of the great power of Satan to overcome us, but of the great power of God to bind up all our interests with his own. We are to talk the language of Christ, to echo His words, nor let any impatient speech come from us. Then we will be a savor of life unto life to all who come in connection with us. And we will obtain an experience that will enable us to comprehend with all saints what is the length and depth and breadth and height, and to know the love of God that passeth knowledge.”—Ellen White, Letter 85-1897, October 21, 1897 par. 8
“Bear in mind that you are God’s by creation, and you are His by redemption. The same Son of the only living God who created you has declared, “A new heart will I give you.” If you will surrender to Him, his grace will make of you a vessel unto honor, and will carry you forward step by step in the progress of Christian perfection, until you shall see the King in His beauty. Day by day He will work great changes in you. He who hath begun a good work in you will through His grace perform it unto the day of Christ’s appearing. The honor of Christ is not less concerned in the perfection of your individual character than is your own honor. You are a member of His body, a part of Himself. He has passed through great suffering, even unto the most cruel death, that you might have probationary time in which to form a character through His sufficiency, that His glory should become your glory, that when you shall appear among the angels of heaven, the just made perfect, you may appear unto the praise and glory of His power."—Ellen White, Letter 85-1897, October 21, 1897, par. 8,9
The more your mind is educated and trained to think of Jesus, to talk of Jesus, the less power will Satan have over your mind. He cannot bear to belong in the company of those who will meditate upon the love of God and Jesus Christ. To dwell upon the beauty, goodness, mercy, and love of Jesus is strengthening to the mental and moral powers, and while the mind is kept trained to do the works of Christ, to be obedient children, you will habitually inquire, Is this the way of the Lord? Will Jesus be pleased to have me do this? Will this course be to please myself or to please Jesus?—Ellen White, Letter 43-1892, September 18, 1892, par. 17

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things.” Shall we do it? Shall we turn over a page in our religious experience and train and educate the mind so that it will not take these things that are disagreeable and think on them? Shall we think on these things that give us no power, or shall we let our minds dwell on those things that will give us a better feeling toward our brethren and elevate our souls to God?—Ellen White, Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, p. 81.2

“It is Satan’s plan to talk about that which concerns himself. He is delighted to have human beings talk of his power, of his working thru the children of men, but by indulgence in such conversation the mind becomes gloomy and sour and disagreeable. We may become channels of communication for Satan thru which words bring no sunshine to the heart. But let us decide that this shall not be. Let us decide not to be channels thru which Satan shall send gloomy disagreeable thoughts. Let our words be not a savor of death unto death, but of life unto life, in the words we speak to the people and in the prayers we offer. God desires us to give unmistakable evidences that we have a spiritual life. We do not enjoy the fulness of the blessing which the Lord has prepared for us because we do not ask in faith. If we would exercise faith in the word of the living God, we should have the richest blessings. We dishonor God by our lack of faith; therefore we can not impart life to others unless we ourselves bear a living, uplifting testimony. We cannot give that which we do not possess. If we will walk humbly with God, if we will walk in the spirit of Christ, none of us will carry heavy burdens. We shall lay them on the great burden-bearer. Then we may expect triumphs in the presence of God, in the communion of His love. Every campmeeting may be a love feast from the beginning to the end because God’s presence is with His people. All heaven is interested in our salvation. The angels of God, thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand are commissioned ministers to those who shall be heirs of salvation. They guard us against evil and press back the powers of darkness that are seeking our destruction. Have we not reason to be thankful every moment; thankful even when there are apparent difficulties in our pathway. The Lord Himself is our Helper.”—Ellen White, Loma Linda Messenger, p. 537.3
We need not fear that the adversary shall be stronger than the mighty God of Jacob, who gave him special victories when he wrestled with God. We are not to talk of Satan’s large power, not to dwell upon this phase, but talk of the greatness and mightiness of God’s power. Steadfastly looking unto Jesus, who is the Author and Finisher of our faith, we shall increase in faith. We shall take the image of the divine likeness. Ellen White, Manuscript 78, 1893 (March 30, 1893) par. 28
Talk faith in Christ; talk hope, and rejoice in courage and be not intimidated with Satan’s devices. Jesus Christ is all-sufficient. Rejoice in His love. “Rejoice in the Lord always; and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:4-8 . Ellen White, Manuscript 78, 1893 (March 30, 1893) par. 29
When Satan casts his hellish shadow athwart my pathway, I do not look at it or talk of it, and glorify the devil by talking of him and his power and what a hard time I am having. No, I cleave right through the shadow and by faith take hold of Jesus Christ. By beholding we “are changed into the same image from glory to glory.” Talk faith. Every doubt you express is a seed sown, and that seed will take root in some heart. We do not want to speak one word of doubt and thus praise the devil for his wonderful power to keep [us] in subjection. No, Christ has purchased me and redeemed me. Satan has no power over me. I am free in Christ Jesus because I believe in Him. Ellen White, Manuscript 16, 1894 (February 25, 1894) par. 40}
We need to praise God more than we do. We should offer Him more thanksgiving. As we show that we are glad in the Lord, the heavenly universe will recognize our offering and will rejoice over us with singing. How often we hedge up our own way and give ourselves into the hands of the enemy by talking of his power . Let us talk instead of the power of the Almighty. Do not honor Satan by speaking of his greatness. God is infinitely greater than Satan . His righteousness goes before His believing ones, and His glory is their rearward. Ellen White, Manuscript 39, 1901 (May 1901) par. 10}
My sister, the Lord asks you to speak no unkind words of your Saviour. Come to Him in faith and trust. Be cheerful. Bring all the sunshine possible into your life. Jesus is your helper. Trust Him all the time. Leave with Him all your perplexities. Do not speak one despondent word; for such words please Satan . When he puts into your mind thoughts of discouragement, talk of Christ’s goodness and tell of His power . Words of trust and hope and thankfulness are as easily spoken as words of distrust and complaint. Close the windows of the soul earthward, and open them heavenward. Put away all repining, and rejoice in the Lord; and then write me another letter, telling me whether you do not feel His light and love and joy in your soul. Ellen White, Letter 72, 1903 (April 28, 1903) par. 22
Satan is playing the game of life for your soul. Shall he conquer? I say No, a thousand times No. God has a work for you to do, but all you have now to do is to look to Jesus, who was lifted up, and live. Ellen White, Manuscript Release 13, 150.3 It is the love of Christ for your soul that constrains me. Shall Christ have died for you in vain? You are unconsciously groping after the heavenly light. Satan shall not conquer; he shall be expelled through prayer and faith. When you come to Jesus, you find He comes to you and clasps you in His everlasting arms. In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, I rebuke the foul and wicked spirit that has acted for you. Jesus is the conqueror. You may exert all your powers, were they not under the bewitching power of Satan and you echo his sentiments; but Christ will break his power for his work. He testifies [He] is to break every yoke and set the oppressed free. You have been bought with a price, even the precious blood of Christ. You feel and see only wrath and condemnation, that you may hate God and all who lead you to Jesus. In Christ you may find all you need. The loving Saviour is already drawing nigh to heal you. Satan would have your soul; shall he have it? Say, No, never; it is Christ’s property. Satan says, “Curse God and die.” Will you do it? He curses God for you, that you may repeat his wicked blasphemy. Will you do it? No, for Jesus has died; He has purchased your life. Luke 10:17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
1 John 4:4 "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."
"Whatever temptation comes to us, as long as there is a devil in our world, we must be armed with a might and power to resist him. How can we do this? Do just as the disciples did. They met together and they prayed together for ten days, and the light of the glory of God came into their midst, and such wonderful things were done under the influence of the heavenly intelligences. Earthly intelligences can do but very little, but when the heavenly intelligences come, and when the power of God is revealed, then the earthly powers have to give back whether they want to or not. There is a Power that rules in the heaven of heavens, and He wants every one of us to know it. He wants us to all understand it, and He wants us to be in a position that we can pray, and He wants us to be in a position that we can humble our hearts before God and walk in all humility of mind. Ellen White, Manuscript 121-1909. 12-13
